Frederic Otto Gmeiner

Hi there 👋️. I am an interaction designer, developer, and HCI researcher focused on advancing human-AI interaction. I study, design, and build novel interaction techniques and systems that augment human strengths with AI, with particular emphasis on enhancing collaboration, creativity, and learning. Drawing on a research-driven, human-centered design process, I explore new interfaces and interaction patterns that enable people to think and work more effectively with AI systems.

I am a PhD candidate in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute, advised by Dr. Nikolas Martelaro and Dr. Ken Holstein.

My research has been published in premier HCI venues, including Best Paper Honorable Mentions at ACM CHI, and is supported by organizations such as the National Science Foundation, Microsoft Research, Autodesk, Google, and Prolific.

Before beginning my PhD, I co-founded FELD, a technology-focused design agency, where I led R&D projects and worked as an interaction designer and software developer for industry partners including Volkswagen, Almato, and the Fraunhofer Society. I have also taught user-centered design for emerging technologies as an Assistant Professor at the American University of Sharjah, and conducted workshops and guest lectures at institutions such as Bauhaus University Weimar, Tongji University, IIT Chicago, Tsinghua University, and NYU Abu Dhabi.

Outside of research, I am a father of two and an avid musician. If you would like to learn more about my work, explore potential collaborations, or simply connect, feel free to reach out — I’d love to hear from you!
